General Conduct and Training Etiquette

At Wexford Taekwon-Do, maintaining a respectful and disciplined environment is essential for effective learning and personal growth. The following guidelines on general conduct and training etiquette are designed to ensure a safe, supportive, and productive training atmosphere for all students. By adhering to these rules, you contribute to a positive experience for yourself and your fellow practitioners.

General Conduct

Respect Everyone:

  • Show respect to instructors, senior students, and fellow students at all times.
  • Use polite language and gestures.
  • Respect all members of senior grade.

Punctuality:

  • Be on time for all classes and events.
  • Inform the instructor in advance if you will be late or absent.
  • Any student who is late or not in a clean and complete dobuk for class must get the instructor’s permission and bow to the instructor before joining the class.

Cleanliness:

  • Keep the dojang (training area) clean and tidy.
  • Pick up after yourself and dispose of any litter properly.

Personal Hygiene:

  • Maintain personal cleanliness and wear a clean uniform (dobuk) for every class.
  • Trim your nails and remove any jewellery before training.
  • A high degree of personal hygiene is expected, e.g., finger and toe nails clipped and clean.
  • To the best of your ability, dobuks must be cleaned and pressed for class.

Equipment Care:

  • Treat all training equipment with care and return it to its proper place after use.
  • Report any damaged equipment to the instructor.

Positive Attitude:

  • Display a positive attitude and a willingness to learn.
  • Support and encourage fellow students in their training.
  • Never lose your temper in the Do-Jang, especially during sparring.

Safety First:

  • Follow all safety guidelines and immediately report any injuries to the instructor.
  • Do not engage in any behaviour that could endanger yourself or others.

Training Etiquette

Bowing:

  • Bow upon entering or leaving the dojang
  • Bow to your instructor at the proper distance.
  • Bow to your partner before you start and when you finish practicing with them.

Class Procedures:

  • Before the class commences and when it finishes, form orderly lines facing the instructor, with the most senior student standing to their right, and the remainder lining up from right to left in order of seniority.
  • At the beginning and end of the class, the most senior student calls the class to attention with the command (CHARYOT), followed by Boosabum (1st-3rd degree Assistant Instructor), Sabum (4th-6th degree Instructor), Sahyun (7th-8th degree Master), or Saseong (9th degree Grand Master), whichever is appropriate.
  • He/She gives the command to bow to the instructor (KYONG-YE); as they bow, all students say “TAEKWON”.
  • Recite the Oath prior to training.

Addressing Instructors:

  • Always address your instructor as Sir/Madam or Mr./Mrs./Ms./Miss.
  • Wait for permission before speaking or asking questions during class.
  • Before asking a question, raise your right hand to attract the instructor’s attention.
  • Always ask for the instructor’s permission before entering or leaving the class.

Class Conduct:

  • Do not talk or engage in distracting activities during class.
  • Raise your hand if you need to ask a question or leave the training area.
  • No profanity will be used in the Do-Jang.
  • Students must behave in a disciplined manner while training.

Effort and Focus:

  • Give your best effort in all exercises and drills.
  • Stay focused and avoid unnecessary movements or distractions.

Training Gear:

  • Dobuk (suit) and belt must be worn in all classes after first grading, with the belt displaying your correct grade and tied in the designated manner.
  • If a T-shirt is to be worn under the dobuk, it must only be white.
  • It is forbidden to wear shoes, runners, etc., in the dojang except for Taekwon-Do shoes.
  • The wearing of jewelry, watches, rings, etc., in the class is strictly not permitted. No earrings or metal hair clips during sparring class.
  • Always turn to the left side before fixing dobuk.

Partner Training:

  • Work cooperatively with your training partners.
  • Respect your partner’s limits and do not apply excessive force.

Prohibited Actions:

  • Smoking, eating, drinking, or chewing gum is not permitted during class.
