This past weekend, the vibrant city of Dublin played host to the Dublin Open, an illustrious event that drew 57 clubs from 7 countries, with almost 1,100 competitors stepping onto the mats. This monumental gathering was not just a competition; it was a celebration of Taekwon-Do, showcasing a remarkable array of talent and dedication. Among the competitors were our very own athletes from Wexford Taekwon-Do, who, across two days of intense competition, demonstrated skill, determination, and sportsmanship that made us all incredibly proud.

Day 1: A Promising Start
The first day set the stage for what was to be an unforgettable weekend. Colin, showcasing exceptional skill and competitive spirit, secured a Silver in patterns among a strong field of 14 competitors and went on to clinch Gold in sparring. His achievements set a high benchmark for the team.
Mr. Nicholas Plikeys, with commendable effort and tenacity, made it through his first round in patterns, facing a tough challenge in the second round. Daniel’s performance in sparring was nothing short of spectacular, earning Gold in a nail-biting finish against the Munster champion, a victory that exemplified the never-say-die attitude we cherish at Wexford TKD.

Day 2: Continuing the Momentum
On the second day, our athletes continued to impress. Cathal’s spirited performance in sparring, Aidan and Tiernan’s Bronze medals in patterns, and Kayla’s indomitable spirit in her tournament debut were highlights of the day. Each moment on the mats was a learning experience, contributing to our team’s growth and camaraderie.
The competition was a testament to the global community of Taekwon-Do, with clubs from across seven countries coming together in a display of mutual respect and passion for the martial art. Our team’s participation in such a vast and diverse event underscores the strength and dedication within our ranks.

Reflecting on Our Achievements
Beyond the medals and accolades, this weekend was a testament to the courage it takes to step into the ring and compete at the highest level. The Dublin Open, with its 57 clubs and almost 1,100 competitors, provided a rich backdrop for our athletes to test their skills, learn from each challenge, and grow stronger together.
A heartfelt thank you goes to Ms. Orlova for her impeccable management of competition administration, and to Roman and Tiernan for their outstanding support as ring assistants. Special recognition is also due to Mr. John Barry, whose role as an umpire upheld the integrity and fairness essential to the spirit of competition.
As we move forward, we carry with us not just the medals and the accolades, but the lessons learned, the bonds forged, and the memories created at the Dublin Open. This event has been a milestone in our journey, a journey that continues to be defined by growth, grit, and the pursuit of excellence.
Here’s to the continued journey of Wexford Taekwon-Do, a journey made richer by experiences like the Dublin Open.
